Santiniketan

Santiniketan is a township in the Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district, West Bengal, India, known as the location of Rabindranath Tagore’s educational project and the Visva-Bharati university. It is a cultural and educational centre that developed around Tagore’s institutions in the early 20th century.

The site is dominated by the university campus and its associated cultural institutions. Key places include the central Visva-Bharati campus with lecture halls, residential quadrangles and galleries, and the Kala Bhavana art faculty with exhibition spaces and workshops. The town is also known for regular cultural events and a strong emphasis on music, dance and visual arts.

Santiniketan began as a retreat established by Debendranath Tagore in the 19th century and expanded by his son Rabindranath Tagore into an educational complex. Rabindranath formally founded Visva-Bharati in 1921; the institution later received central university status in 1951.

The township sits in rural West Bengal at Santiniketan (Bolpur) in Birbhum district, surrounded by agricultural land and smaller villages. The nearest larger urban centres are in West Bengal; the campus functions as the town’s focal point.
