Santiaguito
Volcano Active volcanic complex noted for ongoing eruptions
Santiaguito is the active lava-dome complex on the flank of Guatemala’s Santa María volcano. Visitors and photographers come to watch frequent small eruptions from designated viewpoints and to hire local guides for safe observation.
Santiaguito is a cluster of lava domes on the western flank of the Santa María volcano in Quetzaltenango Department, Guatemala, and is one of the country’s most active volcanic complexes. It formed as a direct consequence of the catastrophic 1902 Santa María eruption.
Following the 1902 eruption of Santa María, lava-dome growth at Santiaguito began in the decades that followed and continued through the 20th and 21st centuries, creating multiple overlapping domes through repeated extrusion and collapse.
Santiaguito sits on the western flank of Santa María in western Guatemala’s highlands, within Quetzaltenango Department, accessible from local towns and routes used by visitors and volcanological teams.
- Ongoing activity: Dome growth began in the early 20th century after the large 1902 eruption of nearby Santa María; the complex has produced frequent ash plumes and pyroclastic flows since then.
What to See #
- Caliente dome: The active vent known as Caliente is the most frequently active dome within the complex and produces regular Vulcanian-style explosions and lava extrusion.
How to Get to Santiaguito #
Santiaguito is accessed via the town of Quetzaltenango or Antigua with local tour operators offering day trips (Antigua is the more common base for guided excursions). Road travel involves mountain routes; visitors must hire licensed guides and respect restricted observation zones established by CONRED (Guatemala’s disaster agency).
Tips for Visiting Santiaguito #
- Hire a local guide for safe viewpoints: Santiaguito is active and guides know which ridges are safe and which are off-limits.
- Bring ear protection if planning to observe during stronger explosions-some eruptions can be surprisingly loud even at distance.
- Check recent eruption reports-activity levels change and local authorities post advisories.
