Santiago, Cape Verde Island

Santiago is the largest and most populous island in the Cape Verde archipelago, located in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is home to the national capital and serves as Cape Verde’s political, economic and transport hub.

The island offers a mix of coastal urban areas, agricultural valleys and a rugged inland with peaks and ridges; visitors commonly see Praia and the colonial settlement of Cidade Velha. Beaches, markets, historic forts and local cultural sites are among the main draws.

European colonization established Santiago as Cape Verde’s early administrative centre and an important Atlantic trading post; Cidade Velha preserves colonial fortifications and historic streets that reflect that period. Over time Praia grew to become the national capital and main port.

Santiago lies in the southern part of the Cape Verde island group; Praia is on the island’s southeast coast and serves as the main gateway by air and sea, while the interior rises to peaks such as Pico da Antónia.

• Praia: Cape Verde’s capital and largest city, located on the southeast coast and serving as the nation’s political and commercial centre.
• Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande): The historic settlement often called Cidade Velha, a fortified colonial town that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Atlantic slave-trade history and colonial architecture.
• Pico da Antónia: The island’s highest peak located inland and offering hiking routes and viewpoints across Santiago’s interior.

Santiago (the island whose main city is Praia) is served by Nelson Mandela International Airport (near Praia). Domestic flights connect Praia with other Cape Verde islands (for example Sal and São Vicente) and some international services also operate into Praia. The airport is about 3-4 km north of Praia city centre - roughly a 10-15 minute drive on the island’s main road (EN1).

There are also regular inter-island ferries that call at Praia’s port; ferries from Sal and São Vicente arrive at Porto de Praia and from there it’s a short taxi or local-bus ride into the city.

• Visit the island's principal UNESCO site, Cidade Velha, in the late afternoon when the light is best for the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe and the steep streets are cooler; it's a short drive west from Praia and easier to combine with a Plateau (Praia) visit.
• Use Praia (Nelson Mandela International) as your arrival/departure hub and plan connections from the capital - many inter-island ferries and buses operate out of Praia's port and terminals, so schedule extra time for transfers.
• Explore inland villages and markets outside the Plateau early in the day to see local life before tourist-focused stalls fill up; hiring a local guide or taxi for a half-day loop will make reaching hillside viewpoints and remote historical ruins quicker and more informative.
