Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice

Santi Giovanni e Paolo (commonly called San Zanipolo) is a major Gothic basilica in Venice, located in the Castello district. Construction spanned the 13th to 15th centuries, and it is one of the largest churches in the city.

The interior contains numerous large funerary monuments and tombs of Venetian doges and nobles, set along the nave and in chapels. Architectural highlights include the basilica’s soaring Gothic arches, the long single nave, and richly carved tombs and altarpieces.

Built by the Dominican order, the church served both liturgical and civic functions and became a traditional burial site for Venice’s rulers and leading citizens. Over the centuries it accumulated artworks and monumental tombs reflecting Venice’s political and artistic history.

The basilica stands near Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, close to the Venetian Arsenal and the northern edge of the historic center, making it accessible on foot from major tourist routes through Venice.
