Santa Rosa National Park is a protected area in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, established in 1971 to conserve both natural habitats and a site of national historical importance.
The park protects tropical dry forest ecosystems characteristic of northwestern Costa Rica and contains coastal plains and dry-forest fauna and flora. Recreational uses include wildlife viewing and visiting the park’s historic ranch house.
The grounds include the preserved hacienda house associated with the 1856 Battle of Santa Rosa, an event remembered in Costa Rican history for a clash that helped repel an incursion in the region. The park was created to protect both this historic site and surrounding landscapes.

How to Get to Santa Rosa National Park #
Santa Rosa National Park is in northwestern Guanacaste Province along the Interamericana (Pan‑American) corridor. The park is typically reached by car from the city of Liberia (Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport) via Route 1; driving to park entrances/ranger stations in the northwestern Guanacaste area generally takes on the order of an hour or so depending on which entrance you use. Public buses run between Liberia and nearby towns on Route 1 from which you would take a taxi or local transport to the park entrance.
Tips for Visiting Santa Rosa National Park #
- Plan your visit in the dry season (December-April) for the most reliable road access and clearer wildlife viewing; park entry is busiest mid-day, so arrive early to spot mammals and birds when they're most active.
- Enter and begin your visit at La Casona (the historic hacienda/visitor area along the Interamericana) to see the battle site and get orientation-many visitors pass by without exploring the park's inland trails and coastal sections such as Playa Naranjo.
- Don't limit yourself to the historical site: allow time to walk some of the park's dry-forest trails and coastal stretches, which are often overlooked by visitors who only stop for La Casona.
