Santa Maria presso San Satiro

Santa Maria presso San Satiro is a church in central Milan noted for a celebrated architectural illusion by Donato Bramante that fakes a deep chancel in a constrained site. The building combines late medieval fabric with important Renaissance work.

The principal attraction is Bramante’s trompe-l’oeil choir at the east end, a painted and sculpted perspective that gives the impression of a spacious apse where only a shallow space exists. The nave and interior chapels contain Renaissance and later decorations consistent with Milanese church interiors.

A medieval church occupied the site before late-15th-century remodelling; Bramante was commissioned to resolve the cramped site and produced the illusionistic solution while the church’s nave and other elements were completed during the Renaissance. The work is regarded as an important early demonstration of Renaissance spatial invention.

The church is located in central Milan, close to the Duomo and the historic city centre, and is readily visited on foot from the cathedral and surrounding attractions.
