Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Venice

Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a small Renaissance church in Venice, renowned for its full marble cladding and harmonious classical proportions. Built between 1481 and 1489 to designs by Pietro Lombardo, it is one of the best-preserved small Renaissance churches in the city.

The exterior is faced with polychrome and white marble and presents a compact, almost cubic volume that contrasts with the surrounding Venetian fabric. Inside, the church has a single nave and a richly decorated choir with carved marble altars and funerary monuments.

The building was commissioned in the late 15th century and represents an early application of Renaissance architectural language in Venice, combining sculptural detail and finely worked stone surfaces. It has been conserved carefully and remains a frequent stop on walks around the Rialto and nearby canals.

Santa Maria dei Miracoli stands close to the Rialto area of central Venice in the Cannaregio district, a short walk from the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal.
