Santa Fe Plaza
Park Historic central plaza and civic gathering place
Santa Fe Plaza anchors the historic downtown with adobe buildings and the Palace of the Governors. Tourists visit for museums, Native American and artisan markets, galleries and regular public events on the square.
The Santa Fe Plaza is the historic central square of Santa Fe, New Mexico, established in the early 17th century as the civic and commercial heart of the city. It remains the focal point of Santa Fe’s historic district and public life.
Laid out during Spanish colonial rule, the plaza long served as a military parade ground, marketplace, and administrative center. Many of the surrounding adobe buildings date to the Spanish colonial and territorial periods and are preserved as part of the historic district.
The plaza sits in downtown Santa Fe and is the city’s geographic and cultural center, roughly 60 miles northeast of Albuquerque.
- Major markets: The plaza hosts major annual markets, including the Santa Fe Indian Market in August and the Spanish Market in July, which draw large crowds and artists from across the region.
What to See #
- Palace of the Governors: A long adobe portal known as the Palace of the Governors forms the plaza's north side and houses museum and vendor spaces used by Native American artisans.
- Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis: The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis sits on the plaza's eastern side and is a prominent 19th- to 20th-century religious landmark in the historic core.
