Santa Cruz Trek Trail

A compact 4-day trek through the high Cordillera Blanca with glacier views and a high pass.

Time to Hike: 4 days, about 50 km total following the Santa Cruz valley from Cashapampa to Vaquería. Most itineraries use 3 to 4 nights on trail.

Best Time to Go: May to September is the main dry season with the most stable weather; July and August are the busiest months.

Getting there: Reach the trailhead by road from Huaraz - roughly a 2 to 3 hour drive to Cashapampa; colectivos and tour transfers run daily. The classic route runs west to east, finishing near Vaquería.

Costs: A Huascaran National Park entrance fee is required; there are no compulsory permits beyond the park ticket. Expect expenses for transport, camping gear or hiring a guide, cook or porter; basic village lodgings are inexpensive.

Difficulty: Non-technical but strenuous - highest point is Punta Union at about 4750 m. Trails can be steep, rocky and exposed to altitude sickness and rapid weather changes.

The route follows the glaciated Santa Cruz valley in the Cordillera Blanca, passing high turquoise lakes, moraine amphitheatres and broad pampas. Towering granite and ice faces frame the path, with classic viewpoints for Alpamayo and Taulliraju and the central climb to the Punta Union pass.

Camping is the norm on the trek; grassy sites and simple water sources are used each night, while small family hostels exist in Cashapampa and Vaquería for pre and post trek stays. Its compact distance, dramatic peak panoramas and an overnight beneath the pass make it one of Peru’s most popular high mountain treks.

Most walkers base themselves in Huaraz, which is reached by overnight bus or a short connecting flight from Lima; buses from Lima typically take 6 to 8 hours. From Huaraz arrange a colectivo or private transfer to Cashapampa to begin the trek.

The standard direction is west to east, beginning at Cashapampa and crossing to Vaquería; from there you can catch shared vehicles to Caraz or return to Huaraz by road. Local agencies in Huaraz organise transfers, mule support and guided packages.

The reliable trekking season runs May through September when Huascaran National Park weather is driest and passes are most likely clear. April and October are shoulder months with greater risk of rain or snow on the Punta Union pass.

Book park entry and any guided services in high season, and allow two nights in Huaraz to acclimatise before starting. Expect cold nights, strong sun at altitude and possible afternoon storms even in the dry season.
