Santa Ana Mountains
Mountains Mountain range in Southern California bordering Orange County
A coastal Southern California mountain range, home to Cleveland National Forest, Santiago Peak and trails used for hiking, mountain biking, camping and seasonal wildflower displays.
The Santa Ana Mountains are a mountain range in Southern California that form the prominent inland ridge and natural backdrop to much of Orange County. Their highest point is Santiago Peak at 5,689 feet (1,734 metres).
The mountains have long been part of the Indigenous landscape of southern California and later supported ranching, timber and limited mining before conservation and national-forest management organized large tracts for recreation and preservation. Management by federal and state agencies has shaped access and use over the 20th and 21st centuries.
The range runs along the interior flank of coastal Southern California, forming the spine between Orange County and inland counties such as Riverside; it is the major high ground south and east of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
- Highest point: Highest summit reaches 5,689 feet (1,734 metres), giving broad views of Orange County, the Pacific Ocean and inland valleys on clear days.
- Local landmark silhouette: The range forms the backdrop called 'Saddleback' that is visible from much of southern Orange County and coastal areas.
