How to Get to Sanming#
Sanming is served by nearby major airports in Fuzhou (Fuzhou Changle) and Xiamen (Gaoqi), while the city’s rail access is centred on Sanming North (Sanmingbei) high-speed station. Most visitors arrive by rail from neighbouring Fujian cities or by coach from the provincial airports and then use taxis or buses to reach the urban centre.
Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC): Fuzhou Changle is the nearest major international airport with frequent domestic connections. Take the airport shuttle or taxi into Fuzhou city (airport bus ~45-60 minutes, CNY 20-30), then transfer to a high-speed train at Fuzhou Railway Station or Fuzhou South; high-speed trains to Sanming North take around 1.5-2.5 hours (see Train card). Long-distance coaches also run from Fuzhou long-distance bus stations to Sanming (about 2.5-3.5 hours, CNY 50-90).
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN): Xiamen is another common gateway for international and domestic flights. From Xiamen Airport take the airport bus or a taxi to Xiamen Railway Station or Xiamen North (30-50 minutes, CNY 15-35). High-speed trains from Xiamen to Sanming North generally take about 2-3 hours with fares typically in the CNY 80-130 range; direct intercity coaches take roughly 3.5-4.5 hours (CNY 70-120).
Train: Sanming North (Sanmingbei) is the main high-speed rail station serving the city; slower conventional services use Sanming (city) station on other lines. Key high-speed routes link Sanming with Fuzhou, Xiamen and other Fujian cities - typical travel times: Fuzhou→Sanming ~1.5-2.5 hours, Xiamen→Sanming ~2-3 hours. Second-class high-speed fares are commonly in the CNY 60-130 range; from the station you can take a taxi or local bus into the city centre (taxi 10-30 minutes, CNY 10-35).
Bus: Intercity coaches connect Sanming with Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and surrounding counties; coach travel times are longer but sometimes cheaper - Fuzhou→Sanming ~2.5-3.5 hours (CNY 50-90), Xiamen→Sanming ~3.5-4.5 hours (CNY 70-120). Within Sanming, city buses are frequent and very low-cost (typically CNY 1-3 per ride); major coach stations are where you’ll find the long-distance services.
How to Get Around Sanming#
Sanming is easiest reached by high-speed train to Sanming North or by intercity coach from nearby Fujian airports; these provide the fastest and most predictable arrivals. Inside the city, taxis/Didi are the most convenient for most travellers, while city buses and dockless bikes are the cheapest options for those on a budget.
- High-speed rail (Sanming North) (CNY 60-130) - Sanming North (Sanmingbei) is the easiest way to get into Sanming from elsewhere in Fujian. Trains from Fuzhou and Xiamen are frequent on many days and take roughly 1.5-3 hours depending on origin; book tickets in advance during holidays. From the station take a taxi or local bus into town - taxis are quick but buses are cheapest.
- Intercity coach (CNY 50-120) - Long-distance coaches serve many routes into Sanming from Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and neighbouring counties. Coaches can be slightly slower than HSR but drop you at central coach stations and are often cheaper, especially for late-evening arrivals. Expect to buy tickets at the station counter or official online platforms.
- Taxi / Didi (CNY 10-40) - Taxis and Didi ride-hailing are the most convenient way to get around Sanming, especially from stations and bus terminals; short city rides typically cost CNY 10-30. Drivers may have limited English - show your destination in Chinese or use the in-app address to avoid confusion. Metered taxis are reliable for door-to-door travel outside peak bus hours.
- City bus (CNY 1-3) - Sanming’s city buses are extensive and extremely cheap (usually CNY 1-3). Routes cover major neighbourhoods, train and coach stations, though buses can be slow because of frequent stops. Have small change, or use a local transport card/QR payment if available for faster boarding.
- Bicycle / e-bike (dockless) (CNY 1-3 per 30 min) - Dockless bike and e-bike systems are common for short trips and last-mile travel; unlock with Alipay/WeChat and pay by minute or half-hour. They’re handy in flatter parts of the city but watch for local traffic and parking rules. Useful for short, casual sightseeing in central districts.
- Walking - Much of central Sanming is compact enough for walking between markets, shops and some attractions; walking is often the quickest way to explore neighbourhoods and avoid short taxi fares. Sidewalk quality varies, so wear sensible shoes and watch for electric bikes and scooters.
