The Sandia Mountains are a prominent fault-block range immediately east of Albuquerque in central New Mexico, with a highest point at Sandia Crest of 10,678 feet (3,255 meters). The range forms the eastern skyline of the Rio Grande valley and is a major recreational and scenic landmark for the Albuquerque region.

The area offers extensive hiking and mountain-biking trails, backcountry routes and a downhill ski area on the northern slopes. Aerial access is provided by the Sandia Peak Tramway, which runs about 2.7 miles each way and brings visitors from the foothills to near the crest for panoramic views of the city and surrounding plains.

Geologically the Sandias are a fault-block uplift that rises steeply from the Rio Grande rift; uplift and faulting produced the dramatic east-facing escarpment. Over the 20th century the mountains became focal points for recreation and conservation, with parts managed within Cibola National Forest and the Sandia Mountain Wilderness.

The range forms the eastern edge of the Albuquerque metropolitan area, with Sandia Crest roughly 10 miles east of downtown Albuquerque. The mountains run north-south along the eastern side of the Rio Grande valley and are easily visible across central New Mexico.

  • Tramway length and function: The Sandia Peak Tramway spans about 2.7 miles and provides a rapid ascent from the Albuquerque foothills to near the crest, with panoramic windows on the cabins.
