Sanahin Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastic complex located in Lori Province in northern Armenia, near the town of Alaverdi. The complex dates mainly from the 10th to 13th centuries and is recognised for its architecture, khachkars and scholastic history.
Key elements include several stone churches, a monastic library and ancillary buildings arranged on a compact site with carved decoration and cross-stone memorials. The complex played a role as a religious, cultural and educational centre in medieval Armenia and retains well-preserved examples of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.
Sanahin was founded under the Bagratid Armenian principality in the early medieval period and developed over several centuries; it later endured periods of repair and conservation. Together with Haghpat it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 as an outstanding example of medieval Armenian monastic architecture.
The monastery lies in the Lori region of northern Armenia, close to the town of Alaverdi and set on a hillside above the Debed River valley.

How to Get to Sanahin Monastery #
Sanahin Monastery is near Alaverdi in Lori Province. From Yerevan drive north on the main highway routes toward Vanadzor/Alaverdi (roughly 180-200 km), a journey of about 3-4 hours by car. Alternatively take a marshrutka (minibus) from Yerevan’s northern bus stations to Alaverdi or Vanadzor, then a short taxi or a 1-2 km walk to the monastery from Alaverdi town.
Tips for Visiting Sanahin Monastery #
- Go early in the morning to avoid the bus groups that arrive later in the day; the site is compact so early visits feel quieter and allow better photography of the khachkars and façades.
- Walk the ridge path that links Sanahin and nearby Haghpat monasteries-this short trail offers panoramic views and lets you see both UNESCO sites without returning to the road, a detail many day visitors miss.
- Take time to inspect the small on‑site museum and cemetery area-some of the finest carved khachkars and inscriptions are not obvious from the main courtyard and are easily overlooked without a local guide.
