The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are two medieval Armenian monastic complexes in Lori Province, northern Armenia, inscribed for their 10th to 13th century architecture and stone carving.

Both monasteries were established and developed between the 10th and 13th centuries under regional Armenian patronage and served as religious, educational and cultural centres. Over time they were expanded and repaired; the stone carvings and inscriptions at both sites document medieval donations and monastic life.

The two sites lie in the Debed River valley of northern Armenia near the town of Alaverdi, within Lori Province, set on and above valley slopes rather than a single enclosed area.

• Viewing point: Best views of the Haghpat complex are from the approach along the Debed River valley where the monastery sits on a hillside overlooking the valley.
• Stone-carvings: Both sites contain numerous khachkars and medieval inscriptions that are significant for studying Armenian stone-carving traditions.

What to See#

• Haghpat Monastery Complex: Located in northern Armenia, each complex comprises multiple buildings including a main church, a gavit (narthex or assembly hall), a refectory, a bell tower and numerous khachkars (carved cross-stones). The complexes date mainly from the 10th to the 13th centuries and retain medieval inscriptions and stone carvings.
• Sanahin Monastery Complex: Consists of churches, a gavit, monastic buildings and a cemetery with khachkars; principal structures date from the 10th to 13th centuries and show local variations on Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.

The Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries are located in Lori Province in northern Armenia near the towns of Alaverdi and Haghpat. The usual approach is by car from Yerevan heading north into Lori Province (the route follows the main northbound road through Vanadzor/Alaverdi); by car the trip from Yerevan takes on the order of a few hours. The two monasteries are close to local towns and reachable by short local drives from Alaverdi or nearby villages.

• Combine Haghpat and Sanahin on the same day: they are close together in Lori Province and commonly visited in one loop from Alaverdi or Vanadzor, so start early to make the most of daylight.
• Visit in the morning or late afternoon for the best light on the stone façades and the valley views; take time to walk the exteriors and small paths around each complex-khachkars and exterior carvings are often overlooked by quick visits.
• Be mindful of seasonal road and weather conditions in northern Armenia (winter snows can affect access) and plan accordingly if traveling outside the summer months.
