San Moisè
Religious Site Baroque Venetian church notable for ornate façade
On a narrow Venetian canal near the Rialto area, San Moisè is a Baroque church with an ornate façade and rich interior decoration that attracts architecture-minded visitors passing the Grand Canal.
San Moisè is a Baroque church on Venice’s Grand Canal in the sestiere of San Marco, noted for its highly ornate 17th-century façade. The front of the church is one of Venice’s most flamboyant examples of Baroque sculpture.
The principal visual highlight is the densely sculpted façade, which is best appreciated from the canal or from nearby bridges and vaporetto stops. The interior is comparatively compact and contains chapels and decorative fittings typical of post-Renaissance Venetian churches.
A place of worship has occupied the site since the medieval period; the present Baroque appearance derives from work carried out in the 17th century. Over time the church has functioned within local confraternities and the liturgical life of the San Marco district.
The church sits on the Grand Canal near the Merceria shopping axis and within easy walking distance of both Rialto and Piazza San Marco, making it accessible on foot or by vaporetto.
- Best viewpoint: The façade is most effectively seen from the Grand Canal or from the vaporetto - close-range views from the canal show the depth of the sculptural decoration.
- Location note: Located within the sestiere of San Marco, it is a short walk from the central tourist axis between Rialto and Piazza San Marco.
