San Michele Maggiore is a Romanesque basilica in Pavia, Lombardy, Italy, notable for its architectural quality and medieval stone decoration. The current fabric dates principally to the 11th and 12th centuries.

Built in the Romanesque period on the site of earlier churches, the present building was completed in the 11th to 12th centuries and has retained much of its medieval character. It has been an important ecclesiastical building in Pavia since the Middle Ages and has undergone conservation work to preserve its stone decoration.

The basilica is located in Pavia’s historic centre in Lombardy, within easy walking distance of the city’s main squares and cathedral.

Pavia is about 35-40 minutes by regional train from Milano Centrale. From Pavia station, the church is a 10-15 minute walk (approximately 800 m) to Piazza della Vittoria in the historical center.

• Stand on the steps outside at sunset-the western light shows off the Lombard‑Romanesque façade and long shadows across the piazza.
• Look for the carved door jambs and capitals: some show extraordinarily well‑preserved 11th-12th century sculptural work.
• Don't miss the crypt: the lowered light and ancient tombs reveal construction phases older than the visible church.
