San Martin Tuxtla
Volcano Active stratovolcano in Veracruz, part of Tuxtlas
Volcanic massif in Veracruz’s Los Tuxtlas, part of the coastal volcanic belt; hikers, naturalists and birdwatchers visit its forested slopes and crater viewpoints.
San Martin Tuxtla is a volcanic peak in the Los Tuxtlas volcanic field on Mexico’s Gulf coast in the state of Veracruz. It is one of the principal volcanic features of the Tuxtlas region.
The slopes are covered by tropical montane forest as part of the larger Los Tuxtlas ecological area, and the area is used for hiking, wildlife observation and botanical interest. Trails and rural roads lead into the hills rather than formal visitor centres.
The feature formed through volcanic activity associated with the Tuxtlas volcanic field and is part of the region’s Holocene volcanism. Its morphology reflects repeated eruptions and subsequent forest regrowth.
The peak sits within the coastal lowlands of southern Veracruz in the Los Tuxtlas area, inland from the Gulf of Mexico and near towns such as Catemaco. The landscape around it is a mix of volcanic hills and lowland rainforest.
- Access: Located within the Los Tuxtlas region, access is usually via rural roads from towns such as Catemaco and other communities in southern Veracruz.
- When to go: Best visited in the dry season when trails are firmer and visibility over the surrounding Gulf coastal plain is clearer.
