San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán Ruins

San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán is an important Olmec archaeological centre in the Gulf Coast region of Veracruz, Mexico, notable for early urban planning, monumental earthworks and large carved stone monuments. The site was a major regional centre during the Early to Middle Formative period, reaching prominence around 1200-900 BCE.

Archaeological remains include extensive earthen mounds, plazas and drainage works, together with numerous carved basalt monuments such as colossal heads and stone thrones produced from distant rock sources. These features demonstrate early complex social organisation and skilled stone-working traditions in Mesoamerica.

The site developed as an organised centre with ceremonial and civic architecture and played a leading role in the region before its decline and partial abandonment in later formative centuries. Excavations and surveys since the mid-20th century have documented the site’s layout and its role in Olmec culture.

San Lorenzo lies in the coastal plain of southern Veracruz, inland from the modern city of Coatzacoalcos and located within the state of Veracruz. It is accessible by road from regional towns and is an established archaeological park and research area.
