The San Juan Mountains are a large and rugged subrange of the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Colorado, United States, known for high alpine peaks, historic mining districts and extensive backcountry terrain. The range contains numerous peaks above 4,000 metres and is geologically complex with extensive volcanic and intrusive formations.
The area is popular for hiking, backpacking, off-road driving and winter sports, and it includes scenic routes and several former mining towns such as Silverton and Ouray that are now outdoor-recreation hubs. Visitors also travel the San Juan Skyway, which passes high mountain passes and offers access to trailheads and historic sites.
Mining boomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; many of the towns and infrastructure remain as historic remnants and tourist attractions. Railroads and narrow-gauge lines once served the mines and today provide scenic and interpretive value.
Geographically the range occupies much of southwestern Colorado; nearest regional centres include Durango to the southwest and Montrose to the north, with numerous access roads and trails into the high country.
