Volcano Active stratovolcano near Chinandega with frequent eruptions
San Cristóbal, Nicaragua’s highest volcano in Chinandega Department, is an active stratovolcano. Trekkers and volcanology visitors organize guided hikes to its crater and study its volcanic landscapes.
San Cristóbal is an active stratovolcano in northwestern Nicaragua’s Chinandega Department and is part of the Cordillera de los Maribios volcanic chain. It is one of Nicaragua’s most prominent volcanic cones and a landmark visible across the surrounding lowlands.
The volcano displays typical stratovolcanic morphology with steep slopes and a summit crater; it has produced minor to moderate explosive and effusive activity in recent decades and is monitored by national volcano observatories. Terrain around the cone is used for limited agriculture in lower slopes and offers vantage points for viewing the volcano.
Geologically the cone was built by successive eruptions during the Quaternary and remains active with periodic emissions of ash and gas that affect nearby communities. The volcano lies in a tectonically active region associated with the subduction of the Cocos Plate beneath Central America.
San Cristóbal rises above the surrounding Pacific plain in Chinandega Department, near regional towns in western Nicaragua and is readily visible from nearby road corridors.
- Elevation: Elevation approximately 1,745 metres, making it one of Nicaragua's highest and most prominent volcanoes.
