San Crisogono

San Crisogono is a basilica in Rome’s Trastevere district with origins in the early Christian period and substantial medieval and later fabric. Archaeological work beneath the church has exposed remains that date to the 4th century, while the visible building includes medieval and Baroque elements.

The interior contains liturgical furnishings and later decorative work from post-medieval restorations, and the complex includes a preserved medieval bell tower and a cloister. The basilica functions as a parish and a titular church and is visited both for worship and for its historical layers.

The church was established in late antiquity and underwent major rebuilds in the medieval period followed by baroque-era decoration and conservation. Excavations carried out in the 20th century clarified earlier building phases and minted the church’s significance as an early Christian site.

San Crisogono stands in Trastevere on the west bank of the Tiber and is within walking distance of Piazza San Cosimato and other Trastevere landmarks.
