Island Largest of California Channel Islands, US Navy-owned
San Clemente Island off southern California is U.S. Navy‑controlled; access requires permission, and permitted visits encounter rugged cliffs, seabird colonies and limited landing sites.
San Clemente Island is the southernmost of the Channel Islands of California and is owned and managed by the United States Navy for training and testing. The island is the largest of the Navy-controlled Channel Islands and has been used for military operations and exercises for much of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Public access is limited and normally requires prior permission from the Navy; the island contains military infrastructure and training ranges as well as areas of natural habitat. The Navy manages both operational activities and conservation of native species and ecosystems on the island.
Geographically the island lies off the Southern California coast within the Channel Islands chain, southwest of the Los Angeles-San Diego coastal region. It is isolated from civilian population centres and reached only by authorized boat or aircraft.
- Access restrictions: Access is strictly controlled by the U.S. Navy and requires a permit; there is no general public ferry service and most visits are restricted to authorised research or guided trips.
