Santa Catalina Island is a populated island off the coast of Southern California in Los Angeles County, known for its towns, recreation and historic development in the early 20th century. Avalon is the principal harbor town with hotels, restaurants and a sheltered bay, while Two Harbors sits at the island’s isthmus and offers a quieter, marina-focused experience. The island is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the mainland and is roughly 22 miles long along its principal axis.

Santa Catalina Island (California) - most visitors arrive by passenger ferry (Catalina Express) from Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point (services to Avalon and Two Harbors). From Los Angeles the drive to Long Beach or San Pedro is typically 30-60 minutes depending on traffic; the ferry crossing time to Avalon is about an hour from Long Beach. Ferries dock in Avalon within a short walk (5-15 minutes) of the town centre and hotels.
