Santa Catalina Island is a populated island off the coast of Southern California in Los Angeles County, known for its towns, recreation and historic development in the early 20th century. It is one of the Channel Islands archipelago and a popular short-distance island destination from the Los Angeles area.

Avalon is the principal harbor town with hotels, restaurants and a sheltered bay, while Two Harbors sits at the island’s isthmus and offers a quieter, marina-focused experience. The island is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the mainland and is roughly 22 miles long along its principal axis.

Catalina’s waterfront Casino building dates to 1929 and contains a large circular ballroom and auditorium used for events and film screenings. The Wrigley family invested heavily in the island in the early 20th century, shaping much of the built environment visitors see today.

The island is reached by scheduled ferries and helicopters and is popular for snorkeling, diving, sport fishing, hiking and day trips from the Los Angeles/Long Beach area.

  • Distance from mainland: The island is roughly 35 kilometres (about 22 miles) off the Southern California coast and is administered as part of Los Angeles County.
  • Access options: Regular ferries and helicopter services connect the island to Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point and other mainland ports; vehicle access is limited on the island.

What to See #

  • Avalon: The island town that serves as the main visitor hub and ferry terminus, offering the historic Casino building, hotels, shops and beaches.
  • Two Harbors: A small settlement on the island's northwest isthmus that serves as a quieter base for boating, diving and access to the more rugged western shore.
  • Catalina Casino: A 1929 entertainment and cultural building on the Avalon waterfront that houses a circular ballroom and an auditorium; it is a prominent landmark and event venue.
