San Bartolo

San Bartolo is an archaeological Maya site in Guatemala’s Petén Department best known for its early painted murals. The murals are significant for their age and for providing rare painted narrative art from the Late Preclassic Maya period.

The principal highlight is the series of well-preserved wall paintings found inside a buried temple-pyramid, showing complex iconography and early glyphic elements. The painted scenes include mythological and ruler imagery rendered on plaster, and the mural complex is a primary reason researchers visit.

Excavations at San Bartolo began in the late 20th century and intensified in the early 2000s, revealing the painted rooms inside a constructed pyramid. The site dates to the Late Preclassic Maya era, and the murals have reshaped understanding of early Maya ritual and royal imagery.

San Bartolo lies in the Petén lowland forest of northern Guatemala, within the region where many Classic and Preclassic Maya sites are located. The site is set in tropical lowland terrain and is approached via forest tracks and archaeological access routes.
