How to Get to San Antonio, Paraguay
San Antonio (Central Department) is reached almost exclusively by road - most international visitors arrive via Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) near Asunción and continue by bus or taxi. The main long‑distance bus hub is the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción (TOA); from there frequent services and colectivos connect to San Antonio.
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU): The main international gateway for the Asunción metro area, located in Luque. From ASU you can reach San Antonio by taxi or remiss (private radio taxi) in around 30-50 minutes depending on traffic; expect roughly 70,000-120,000 PYG for a direct airport taxi. A cheaper option is to take a taxi or local bus into Asunción and then a bus or colectivo to San Antonio (see Bus below); that combined trip typically takes 60-90 minutes and costs about 3,000-6,000 PYG.
Train: Paraguay does not have regular national passenger rail services, and there is no train connection to San Antonio. Travel to San Antonio is by road only.
Bus: Regular intercity buses to San Antonio depart from the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción (TOA) and from various stops around Asunción. Journey time is typically about 30-50 minutes from TOA depending on route and traffic; fares are usually in the range of 3,000-6,000 PYG. In addition to full-size buses, frequent colectivos/combis run shorter routes between Asunción suburbs and towns in Central Department at lower fares (see transport section).
How to Get Around San Antonio, Paraguay
Getting around San Antonio and the surrounding Central Department is primarily by bus, colectivo or taxi - the road network is the only practical option since Paraguay has no passenger rail. For most visitors, intercity buses or a combination of colectivo plus a short taxi ride are the cheapest and simplest choices; rent a car only if you want greater freedom to explore nearby towns and countryside.
- Intercity bus (3,000-6,000 PYG) - Full‑size intercity buses run from the Terminal de Ómnibus de Asunción (TOA) to San Antonio and other towns in the Central Department. Buses are the most economical and reliable option for most travellers; buy tickets at the terminal or on board for shorter runs. Expect a roughly 30-50 minute trip and bring cash in Paraguayan guaraní for fares and any luggage fees.
- Colectivos / Combi (minibus) (1,500-3,000 PYG) - Colectivos (shared minibuses or combis) operate on many suburban routes between Asunción, the Gran Asunción area and San Antonio. They are frequent and inexpensive but can be crowded and have irregular schedules; tell the driver your stop in advance. These are the fastest budget option during peak hours but have limited luggage space.
- Taxis & Remises (30,000-80,000 PYG) - Taxis and remises (prearranged radio taxis) are widely available in Asunción and San Antonio; remises are preferable from the airport for a fixed fare. Drivers often expect cash payment; agree the fare before starting or ask for the meter (meters are not universal). Taxis are convenient for door‑to‑door trips or when carrying luggage, but they cost noticeably more than buses.
- Moto‑taxi (1,500-4,000 PYG) - Moto‑taxis operate in smaller towns and can be a very quick way to cover short distances or reach locations off the main roads. They are cheap and plentiful but offer minimal protection - avoid them in heavy rain or at night if possible. Always agree the fare up front.
- Car rental (120,000-300,000 PYG/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring Central Department and rural areas around San Antonio. Roads around the town are generally passable, but expect occasional potholes and limited parking in busy areas. A rental is handy if you plan day trips, but city parking and fuel costs add up.
- Walking - San Antonio is small enough that many places in town are reachable on foot; walking is the best way to explore the central neighbourhoods, markets and riverside areas. Pavement quality varies, so wear comfortable shoes and be cautious after rain.
