Samye
Religious Site Historic Tibetan monastery, reputed first in Tibet
Founded in the 8th century in the Yarlung Valley, Samye monastery is one of Tibet’s earliest Buddhist complexes; pilgrims and visitors come for its timber-and-stone assembly halls, circumambulation paths and annual festivals.
Samye is a historic Tibetan Buddhist monastery complex in the Yarlung Valley of southern Tibet, regarded as the first major monastery established in Tibet in the late 8th century. It is traditionally associated with the introduction of organized monasticism to Tibet under royal patronage.
The complex is notable for its mandala-inspired layout - a central Assembly Temple surrounded by subsidiary temples and chapels arranged on a square plan - intended to represent Buddhist cosmology in built form. The architecture and arrangement remain key reasons for visitation, along with surviving murals and monastic structures.
Samye was founded under the patronage of King Trisong Detsen with the involvement of Indian and Central Asian Buddhist teachers. It was the location of an influential religious debate in the late 8th century that affected the direction of Tibetan Buddhism, and the site has undergone rebuilding and restoration at various points in its history.
The monastery sits on the southern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo in the Yarlung Valley near the town of Tsetang (Tsedang) in central-southern Tibet.
