Samuilova Krepost (Samuel’s Fortress) is a medieval hilltop fortress named for Tsar Samuel of the First Bulgarian Empire. The site comprises surviving sections of defensive walls and towers and is a regional historical landmark.
The fortress dates to the medieval period when the Bulgarian state built and used hilltop fortifications for defence; its ruins reflect successive phases of construction and repair. It is preserved as an archaeological and tourist site with walking access to the ramparts.
The fortress stands on a prominent rocky hill in Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria, overlooking the surrounding countryside and settlements. It is reached from nearby roads and local towns.
