Heraclea Sintica Archaeological Site

Heraclea Sintica is an ancient city ruin in southwestern Bulgaria that preserves remains from Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site includes city remains and architectural traces that document long-term urban occupation.

Excavations have uncovered walls, public structures and domestic remains that illustrate the city’s layout and historical development under Hellenistic and Roman influence. The site is of regional archaeological importance for the study of classical urbanism in the Balkans.

The city was founded and developed in the Hellenistic era and persisted into Roman times, with material culture reflecting continuity and change across those periods. Archaeological work has proceeded in phases and continues to refine the site’s chronology and functions.

Heraclea Sintica lies in Blagoevgrad Province in southwestern Bulgaria, within the broader plains and foothills near the modern town of Petrich and not far from the border with Greece and North Macedonia.

• Location: An archaeological site with visible Hellenistic and Roman remains located to the southwest of the modern town of Petrich in southwestern Bulgaria.

• Check opening hours with the Regional Historical Museum-Petrich or local tourist office before visiting - the excavation area is small and access or guided tours can be limited.
• Combine the ruins with a stop in nearby Petrich to see excavated finds and displays; many visitors miss the museum context that explains the site's plan, walls and later-period remains.
• Visit in the cooler morning hours during summer: the exposed site has little shade, and archaeological features are easier to appreciate when light falls across the ruins.
