Samos
Island Greek island with ancient heritage and archaeological sites
Samos, close to the Turkish coast, offers the Heraion sanctuary and sites linked to Pythagoras, vineyards, pebble beaches and mountain villages reachable by ferry from the Greek mainland.
Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, very close to the coast of western Anatolia. It covers about 477 square kilometers and is noted for archaeological sites connected to ancient Greek culture.
Archaeological highlights include the Heraion sanctuary and the 1,036-meter Eupalinos tunnel, both components of a UNESCO World Heritage inscription. The island also offers mountainous hiking on Mount Kerkis, coastal towns such as Vathy, and seaside villages with beaches and vineyards.
In antiquity Samos was a powerful Ionian polis and the birthplace of figures such as the mathematician Pythagoras; major construction projects and maritime activity date to the Archaic and Classical periods. Over centuries it has shifted between independent rule, Byzantine and Ottoman control, and was incorporated into modern Greece in the 19th century.
Geographically the island lies immediately off the coast of western Turkey, separated by a narrow strait, and is part of the North Aegean administrative region. The main airport and ferry ports provide links to the Greek mainland and neighboring Turkish ports.
- UNESCO sites: Contains two UNESCO World Heritage entries: the Heraion sanctuary and the Eupalinos tunnel, the latter being a 1,036-meter 6th-century BC engineering tunnel.
- Transport links: Served by Samos International Airport and regular ferries to the Turkish coast and mainland Greece, making it accessible from both directions.
What to See #
- Pythagoreio: A harbor town and UNESCO-listed archaeological area with a grid of Classical-era remains and the modern port; the nearby archaeological museum displays finds from the island's sanctuaries.
- Tunnel of Eupalinos: A sixth-century BC engineering feat: an underground aqueduct tunnel approximately 1,036 meters long carved through a mountain to supply water to the ancient city.
- Heraion of Samos: A sanctuary complex dedicated to the goddess Hera, paired with the Eupalinos tunnel as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their archaeological significance.
- Mount Kerkis: The island's highest peak at 1,434 meters, forming a limestone massif popular with hikers and offering panoramic views across the Aegean.
- Vathy (Samos Town): The island's main port and administrative center, set on a deep fjord-like bay with neoclassical architecture and a horseshoe-shaped harbor.

Tips for Visiting Samos #
- Walk the seafront promenade in Vathy at sunset to hear locals trading stories-Samos is small enough that chance conversations often lead to invites for homemade wine.
- Visit the Heraion of Samos (ancient temple site) early in the day; the site is compact but carries complex layers of Ionian architecture.
- Try local wine: Samos Muscat is a dessert wine made on the island-sample it with baklava at a kafeneio.
