Sammezzano Castle

Sammezzano is a 19th-century Moorish-revival palazzo and estate in the village of Leccio, near Reggello in Tuscany. It is best known for its highly ornate, polychrome interior rooms and exotic historicist decoration commissioned in the 19th century.

The interior contains a sequence of elaborately decorated halls and chambers featuring tilework, carved wood, painted surfaces and complex geometric ornamentation in a Mudejar-influenced style. The ensemble is notable among 19th-century Italian historicist architecture for its scale and level of decoration.

Major refurbishment and decorative work were carried out in the mid- to late 19th century under the patronage of the estate owner, who commissioned the Orientalist redesign that defines the site’s character today. Since the late 20th century the estate has faced conservation challenges and limited public access.

Sammezzano lies in the municipality of Reggello in the province of Florence, within inland Tuscany; the estate sits in parkland in the village of Leccio, southeast of the city of Florence.

Sammezzano (Castello di Sammezzano) is near Leccio in the municipality of Reggello, east of Florence in Tuscany. By car it is roughly 30-40 km southeast of Florence (about 30-50 minutes) - take the A1/E35 and exit at Incisa‑Reggello or use the SR69/SS67 corridors, then follow local roads to Leccio. By public transport, take regional trains from Florence toward Figline Valdarno/Rignano sull’Arno and then a local bus or taxi for the final few kilometres (the final leg typically cannot be covered on foot from the nearest train station).

• Access to Sammezzano's interior is limited and the villa is usually open only for organised guided visits or pre‑booked events - check the official tour announcements and book well in advance, as tours commonly sell out.
• Join a guided tour rather than attempting independent access; the hyper‑decorated Moorish‑Revival rooms are the main attraction and conservation concerns mean free exploration is rarely allowed.
