Samʾal
Archaeological Site Ancient Neo-Hittite city ruins in southeastern Turkey
Ancient Sam’al (Zincirli Höyük) in Gaziantep Province preserves an Iron Age citadel with basalt reliefs and inscriptions; archaeologists and museum visitors study its carved stone panels.
Sam’al is the ancient name of a fortified Iron Age city located at the mound known today as Zincirli Höyük in Gaziantep Province, southeastern Turkey. The site was a regional Neo-Hittite/Aramaean kingdom centre that was prominent in the early first millennium BCE.
Archaeological highlights include palace remains, monumental stone reliefs and a corpus of inscriptions in a local Semitic dialect, which together document the city’s political and religious life. Finds from the site illuminate urban planning and elite art in the 9th-7th centuries BCE and are significant for studies of Syro-Anatolian cultures.
The site was built and occupied by local rulers of the Neo-Hittite/Aramaean cultural milieu during the early Iron Age; it experienced phases of construction and re-use through the first millennium BCE before losing prominence under larger regional kingdoms. Systematic excavations began in the late 19th century and have continued in modern campaigns, producing substantial architectural and epigraphic evidence.
Geographically the mound sits inland in Gaziantep Province, southeast Turkey, roughly in the countryside west of the modern town of Kilis and northeast of the provincial capital Gaziantep. The site is rural and approached by local roads from nearby towns and highways.
- Excavation history: Excavations began in the late 19th century and have continued intermittently under German-led teams; substantial finds were removed to museum collections in Europe and Turkey.
- Visitor note: The site lies in a rural area and is visited by appointment or as part of organised archaeological tours rather than regular mass tourism.
What to See #
- Zincirli Höyük (the tell): The main archaeological mound is Zincirli Höyük (the tell at the site), covering the urban core of ancient Sam'al and containing palace remains and public architecture excavated in multi-season campaigns.
- Reliefs and inscriptions: Stone reliefs, orthostats and inscribed blocks found at the site include carved figural panels and texts in a local Semitic dialect often referred to as Samalian; many important pieces are now in museum collections.
How to Get to Samʾal #
The site (Zincirli/Samʼal) lies roughly 37-45 km west of central Gaziantep by road, accessed from the D825 and local provincial roads; signage reads Zincirli Höyük. The nearest town with services is the district center of Islahiye; from Gaziantep, expect a 50-70 minute drive depending on traffic.
Tips for Visiting Samʾal #
- Arrange a local guide in Gaziantep - rural signage is sparse and GPS points can be misleading.
- Bring a hat and water: the tell is exposed and summer heat is intense; spring and autumn are much more comfortable.
- Look closely at the inscribed basalt stela fragments in the on-site shelter - the Phoenician-Palestinian alphabetic inscriptions are small but legible.
Best Time to Visit Samʾal #
Best visited in spring or autumn to avoid midsummer heat and winter storms. Crowd levels are negligible year-round.
