The Salt Range is a system of hills and low mountains in Pakistan’s Punjab known for extensive rock-salt deposits and distinctive sedimentary outcrops. The range includes economically important salt mines and varied limestone and gypsum exposures.
Key visitor attractions are the salt workings, most notably the Khewra Salt Mine which provides developed visitor passages and displays inside worked salt caverns. The hills also offer exposed strata and fossil-bearing units of interest to geologists.
Salt extraction from deposits in the range has a long history and the area has been exploited for salt on a commercial scale in modern times. Geological study of the sequence has made the Salt Range important in regional stratigraphy.
Geographically the Salt Range lies in north-central Punjab and forms a roughly east-west belt of hills; the town of Khewra and its mine lie within the range.
