Rohtas Fort is a large 16th-century fortress in Punjab, Pakistan, constructed by Sher Shah Suri between 1541 and 1548 as a military stronghold and administrative centre to control strategic routes.

The fort features massive sloping stone ramparts, numerous bastions and a system of gates that combine practical defence with architectural detail. Built to dominate the surrounding landscape and secure approaches, the complex includes fortified gateways and inner defensive works.

Rohtas served successive regional powers after its construction and remains one of the major examples of early modern fortification in South Asia, noted for its scale and preservation of walls and gates.

The fort lies in northern Punjab near the village of Rohtas and the town of Dina, in the general vicinity of the Jhelum district, occupying a strategic position above the surrounding plains.

• Principal gates: Sohail (Shah-Truck) and Daan gates among the 12 principal entrances that punctuate the fort’s ramparts, each serving as fortified access points with decorative and defensive features.
• Ramparts and bastions: The inner fortifications and bastions, a system of thick sloping walls and numerous angled towers forming the fort’s defensive perimeter constructed in the mid-16th century.

• Enter via the main access from the nearby town (Dina/Jhelum area) where visitor parking and local guides are based; guides are useful for historical context and pointing out defensive features.
• Visit in late afternoon light for stronger photographic contrast on the fort's ramparts and stairways, and to avoid the hottest part of the day.
• Make time to walk the curtain walls and bastions rather than just photographing the gates - interior terraces, ramps and defensive passages are often overlooked but reveal the fort's scale and construction techniques.
