Salonga National Park is a vast tropical forest reserve in central Democratic Republic of the Congo and the country’s largest national park. It protects extensive lowland rainforest in the Congo Basin and is recognised for high biodiversity and populations of species such as bonobos, forest elephants and many endemic primates.

The park contains large tracts of intact primary forest, river networks and swamp systems that support a wide range of fauna and flora; it is managed as a remote conservation area with limited public infrastructure. Scientific research and carefully authorised tourism or community projects are the main forms of controlled visitation due to remoteness and conservation needs.

Salonga was designated to protect central Congo Basin rainforest ecosystems and the wildlife they support, and it is recognised internationally for its conservation value. The park lies in central DRC across several provinces; the listed administrative location includes Tshuapa province and access is typically via river transport from regional towns.

Geographically the park occupies vast forested lowlands in the interior of the Congo Basin, with river corridors that are the primary travel routes through the reserve and link to regional waterways.

  • Size and biodiversity: It is the largest protected area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's rainforest core and an important refuge for species such as the bonobo and forest elephant.
  • Access and logistics: Access is difficult and typically by river transport; guided, authorised trips and research visits require permits and logistical planning due to remoteness.

How to Get to Salonga National Park #

Salonga National Park is very remote and is principally reached by river. The usual approach is by boat (riverboat/pirogue) from regional river ports such as Mbandaka or Boende into the park; those river journeys can take multiple days depending on origin and river conditions. Mbandaka is the common regional gateway and is served by domestic flights from Kinshasa; from Mbandaka you arrange river transport into park access points.

Tips for Visiting Salonga National Park #

  • Salonga is extremely remote and access is tightly controlled; organise any visit well in advance through the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) or reputable conservation operators who handle permits and logistics.
  • Expect lengthy river travel and logistically complex itineraries - most visits use longboats and require multi‑day journeys from regional hubs, so plan schedules and contingency days accordingly.
  • Don't expect conventional tourist facilities: the park is best visited as part of a conservation or research program, where you'll see endemic wildlife such as bonobos and learn about habitat protection rather than standard sightseeing.

Best Time to Visit Salonga National Park #

Visit Salonga during the region's drier months (roughly June-September) when river levels and trails are easier to navigate.

Drier season (easier access)
June-September · ~24-28°C
Relatively lower rainfall improves river and trail access in parts of Salonga, making navigation and wildlife viewing easier in this very remote rainforest.
Rainy season
October-May · ~24-28°C
Hot, humid and very wet with heavy rains that make travel difficult and increase mosquito activity in the park.
