Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument
Park Ruined Pueblo villages and Spanish mission remains
Scattered across New Mexico grasslands, Salinas Pueblo Missions preserves 17th‑century Spanish mission ruins and ancestral Pueblo village remains. Visitors come for masonry ruins, interpretive trails and the quiet landscape framing archaeology and Spanish-Pueblo encounters.
Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument in central New Mexico protects the ruins of three prehistoric and historic pueblo settlements and associated 17th-century Spanish mission complexes. The three component sites are known as Gran Quivira, Abo and Quarai.
Each unit presents masonry pueblo ruins and the stone remnants of Spanish mission churches and plazas, with interpretive trails and informational signage. The sites illustrate the interaction of local Pueblo communities and Spanish colonial mission activity during the 1600s.
The pueblos were occupied by ancestral Puebloan communities from late precontact centuries into the historic period and later became locations for Spanish mission establishment during the 17th century. Over time the settlements were abandoned and later documented and protected for their archaeological and historic significance.
All three sites are located in central New Mexico near the town of Mountainair, set on the eastern slopes of the Manzano Mountains and accessible by paved roads and short walks from parking and visitor areas.
- Three component sites: The monument protects three separate pueblo and mission sites - Gran Quivira, Abo and Quarai - each with Puebloan architecture and adjacent Spanish mission remains.
- Access point: The visitor contact and interpretive information is centred near the town of Mountainair, which is the usual access point for all three sites.

- Gran Quivira: Gran Quivira - the largest of the three sites, featuring multiroom pueblo ruins and the remains of a large 17th-century mission church. It stands in a broad valley and is the most remote of the three units.

- Quarai: Quarai - includes pueblo ruins and the remains of a mission church set on a low terrace with sweeping views; this site also preserves earthworks and masonry associated with 17th-century colonial-era settlement.
