How to Get to Salazie#
Salazie (Hell-Bourg) is best reached by road from Réunion’s airports - Roland Garros (RUN) in the north is the most convenient. Public buses exist but are limited on the mountain roads, so car hire or a transfer/tour is recommended.
Roland Garros / Saint-Denis Airport (RUN): The main international airport on Réunion. From RUN drive or take a taxi to Salazie (Hell-Bourg area) - journey time roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on route and traffic; taxis and transfers are available but can be expensive.
Pierrefonds Airport (ZSE) / Saint-Pierre: An alternate airport in the south; driving from ZSE to Salazie takes longer (often 1.5-2.5 hours) because Salazie is inland and mountainous. Renting a car is the most flexible way to reach the cirque.
Train: Réunion has no railway network.
Bus / Car services: Citalis regional buses serve some routes on the island, but mountain roads to Salazie mean bus services are limited and slower. Most visitors use a rental car, taxi or organised tour to reach Hell-Bourg and the Cirque de Salazie.
How to Get Around Salazie#
Because Salazie sits in a mountainous cirque, road travel from Roland Garros (RUN) is the usual approach. A rental car or pre-booked transfer/tour is recommended; public buses exist but are infrequent on the mountain routes.
- Car rental (≈€40-70/day) - Renting a car is the most practical and flexible way to reach Salazie and to explore Réunion’s interior; mountain driving can be steep and winding so choose a car with good brakes. Rentals start from moderate daily rates and allow you to stop at viewpoints en route.
- Taxi / Shuttle (≈€80-150 (airport → Salazie, one-way)) - Taxis or pre-booked airport shuttles provide direct transfers to Salazie and Hell-Bourg; convenient but considerably more expensive than public buses. Good option for arrivals outside bus hours or if you prefer door-to-door service.
- Bus (Citalis / regional) (A few EUR) - Citalis buses serve some routes but mountain access means fewer services and longer journey times. Use buses for a budget option when timetables align, but expect less frequency and longer rides compared with car travel.
- Organised tours (From ≈€40 per person (day tours)) - Many visitors join guided tours or day trips to the Cirque de Salazie from Saint-Denis or other towns; these include transport and local commentary and are a hassle-free way to visit if you don’t want to drive mountain roads yourself.
- Walking - Hell-Bourg and the village around Salazie are compact and best explored on foot once you arrive; there are several short hikes and viewpoints nearby. Walking is ideal for seeing the historic village and local sights.
