Salar Jung Museum

The Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad is a major museum founded on the private collections of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III and opened to the public in the early 1950s. It houses a broad, cross-cultural assemblage of sculptures, paintings, furniture, textiles and arms from Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Galleries are organized by theme and region and include collections of European paintings, Islamic art, South Asian sculpture, decorative furniture and an extensive arms and armour gallery. The museum’s displays reflect the tastes of a single prominent collector and the breadth of acquisitions amassed over decades.

The collection was transferred from a private estate into a public institution in the mid-20th century and the museum building and galleries have been expanded to accommodate large numbers of objects and visitors. It remains a principal cultural attraction in Hyderabad with substantial holdings on view.

The museum is located in the city of Hyderabad in Telangana and is reachable from central areas of the city; it is one of the city’s main cultural institutions and tourist sites.
