Salamis
Religious Site Ancient Cypriot city-kingdom, site of classical ruins
Near Famagusta, Salamis preserves Roman baths, a theatre and colonnaded streets from a once‑major Cypriot city. Visitors explore excavated ruins and combine them with trips to nearby medieval Famagusta.
Salamis is an extensive ancient city and archaeological site on the east coast of Cyprus near modern Famagusta, with remains dating from the Phoenician/Greek periods through the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. It was one of the principal ancient cities on the island and developed into a major urban and port centre.
Prominent visible ruins include a large Roman theatre, bath complexes, a colonnaded main street and gymnasium, together with several early Christian basilicas and mosaic floors. The site demonstrates formal urban planning and public architecture spanning many centuries.
Founded in antiquity and occupied continuously through classical and late antiquity, Salamis rose to prominence as an administrative and commercial centre before decline in the early medieval period due to combined factors including earthquakes and changing political conditions. Archaeological investigation and conservation have been carried out intermittently since the 19th century.
The ruins lie on Cyprus’s eastern coast in Famagusta District, a short distance north of the modern city of Famagusta and beside the Mediterranean shoreline.
- Multi-period occupation: The archaeological site includes material from multiple periods - Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine - reflecting long-term urban occupation.
- Visitor access to ruins: Accessible ruins include large public buildings, baths and baths' hypocaust remains, and many structures are presented in situ at the coastal site north of Famagusta.
What to See #
- Roman theatre: A large Roman theatre whose remains form one of the site's most visible structures, used for public performances and civic events in antiquity.
- Colonnaded street and gymnasium: A colonnaded street and gymnasium complex that illustrate the city's planned Hellenistic and Roman urban layout and public amenities.
- Basilicas and mosaics: Early Christian basilicas and mosaic pavements that reflect the city's later Byzantine-era ecclesiastical importance.

- Start at the on-site visitor centre/museum (when open) to get context and then walk the main colonnaded streets toward the theatre and baths - the theatre area attracts most attention but the gymnasium and baths are extensive.
- Combine the site with a short visit to nearby archaeological remains along the coast to appreciate the ancient port layout; many visitors focus on the theatre and miss the harbour-related ruins.
- Check opening hours ahead of time (they can vary) and aim for weekdays if you want fewer organized groups.
