Sal, Cape Verde

Sal is a low, arid island in the Cape Verde archipelago, administered as the municipality of Sal. Historically associated with salt extraction, it is now one of Cape Verde’s key international tourism destinations.

The island is best known for long sandy beaches around Santa Maria, consistent trade winds that make its coast popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the salt pans in the Pedra de Lume volcanic crater where visitors can float in dense saline water. The main settlement and airport are at Espargos, which serves as the island’s administrative hub.

Portuguese explorers found the Cape Verde islands in the 15th century and salt working became an early economic activity on Sal; tourism expanded strongly in the late 20th century. Infrastructure development around the airport and coastal resorts transformed the island’s economy.

Geographically Sal sits in the central Atlantic off the west coast of Africa as part of Cape Verde. The island is characteristically flat and windswept, with low volcanic hills and coastal lagoons.
