Main image

Saiwa Swamp National Park is a small protected wetland in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya established to conserve swamp habitat and its specialist wildlife. It is the smallest of Kenya’s national parks and is known for wetland species rather than large savannah mammals.

The park is visited mainly for close-up observation of the sitatunga - a marsh antelope adapted to swampy terrain - and of wetland birds and amphibians. Elevated boardwalks and short trails provide access into the swamp without disturbing sensitive habitat.

The area was set aside to protect the swamp ecosystem and its specialist species and has been managed as a national park within Kenya’s protected-area network. Management emphasises habitat protection and low-impact visitor routes.

The park lies in western Kenya’s highlands within Trans-Nzoia County, set in a mosaic of farmland and natural wetland close to local towns in the Kitale area.

  • Sitatunga focus: Protects swamp habitat and one of Kenya's few remaining populations of the marsh-dwelling sitatunga antelope, making it an important site for this species.
  • Visitor access: The reserve is small and accessed on foot via boardwalks and trails that allow observation of wetlands and waterbirds at close range.

How to Get to Saiwa Swamp National Park #

Saiwa Swamp National Park lies in Trans‑Nzoia County close to the town of Kitale. The park is best reached by road from Kitale-roughly 10-20 km depending on the park entrance (about a 20-30 minute drive); hire a car or taxi in Kitale or take a local matatu toward communities near the reserve and ask the driver for the closest stop, then walk into the park from the nearby access point.

Tips for Visiting Saiwa Swamp National Park #

  • Book a local guide at the park entrance - Saiwa Swamp is Kenya's smallest national park and guides know the best boardwalks and hides to see the rare sitatunga and wetland birds.
  • Plan an early-morning visit for active wildlife and quieter trails; the park is compact so a 2-3 hour guided walk often covers the highlights, letting you avoid midday heat and insects.
  • Stay on marked paths and boardwalks to protect the fragile swamp vegetation and to increase your chances of spotting shy species that withdraw into reeds if disturbed.
