Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is the principal church of the Peter and Paul Fortress in central Saint Petersburg, Russia, and functions as the burial place for many Russian emperors. Construction began in the early 18th century under Peter the Great and the cathedral is a landmark of the city’s baroque architecture.

The tall gilded spire is one of Saint Petersburg’s most recognizable skyline features and the interior holds the imperial tombs, ornate memorials and baroque decoration. Visitors commonly see the tombs and the cathedral’s richly decorated nave; the fortress complex also contains museums and ramparts to explore.

Built to a design associated with the Swiss-Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the 1710s and 1720s, the cathedral served both liturgical and dynastic functions for the Russian state. Over the centuries it has been the site of imperial funerals and later conservation work to preserve the tombs and interior decoration.

The cathedral stands on Zayachy Island in the Neva River, immediately east of the Winter Palace and central St Petersburg. It is within the compact city centre and is accessible on foot from nearby historic districts and river embankments.

The Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral sits inside the Peter and Paul Fortress on Zayachy Island in central Saint Petersburg. The nearest metro is Gorkovskaya (Moskovsko‑Petrogradskaya line); from Gorkovskaya it’s roughly a 10-15 minute walk to the fortress across the river area. In summer river boats also call near the fortress; from Nevsky Prospekt it’s a 15-25 minute walk across the bridges to the island.

• Arrive early or late in the afternoon to avoid cruise-ship and tour-group peaks around the Peter and Paul Fortress; light at those times also improves photographs of the cathedral's spire against the Neva.
• Enter via the fortress main gates and buy admission that includes the cathedral interior so you can see the Romanov burial vaults; visiting the cathedral's interior is the main reason to enter rather than just seeing the exterior from across the river.
