Saint Sophia Church

Saint Sophia Church in Sofia is an early medieval church in Bulgaria and the namesake of the capital city. It is one of Sofia’s oldest preserved churches and sits immediately adjacent to the Roman-Byzantine remains of Serdica.

The church is noted for its Early Byzantine fabric and preserved interior features, with visible archaeological layers around the building and in the adjacent open area. Nearby landmarks include the Rotunda of St. George and other remains of the ancient city, making the area a compact archaeological and historic ensemble.

A Christian church has occupied the site since late antiquity; the building visible today preserves elements from the Early Byzantine and medieval periods. Over time the church served as a cathedral and later retained civic and religious significance for the city that eventually took its name.

Saint Sophia stands in central Sofia in Sofia City Province, within a short walk of the modern Largo government complex and the Rotunda of St. George, in the historical heart of the city.
