Saint Sampson’s Cathedral is an 18th-century Russian Orthodox church in Saint Petersburg originally founded to commemorate the 1709 Battle of Poltava. The extant stone building dates to the early 18th century and exhibits baroque decorative features typical of the period.
The church interior contains traditional Orthodox furnishings including an iconostasis and has been used for parish worship and commemorative services since its completion. The building has undergone restorations to repair wartime and later damage and to conserve its historic decoration.
The cathedral stands in central Saint Petersburg and is one of several city churches that date from the early decades of the city’s foundation by Peter the Great.
