Kresty Prison

Kresty Prison is a historic detention complex in central Saint Petersburg notable for its two cruciform cell blocks. The buildings were constructed in the late 19th century and became one of the city’s best-known prisons.

Throughout the 20th century the complex held a wide range of inmates, including political prisoners during the Tsarist and Soviet periods, and was associated with overcrowding and harsh conditions. The cross-shaped design of the cell blocks gave the prison its common name - Kresty means crosses in Russian.

In recent years prisoner populations were moved to modern facilities outside the city and the original Kresty buildings have been the subject of redevelopment and administrative change. The complex sits close to the city center and major thoroughfares in Saint Petersburg.
