Saint Louis Cathedral
Religious Site Former cathedral in Tunis with colonial-era architecture
Perched on Carthage’s Byrsa hill, Saint Louis Cathedral dates to the French protectorate; visitors note its Romanesque façade, Mediterranean views and proximity to Carthage’s archaeological sites.
Saint Louis Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Louis de Carthage) is a former Roman Catholic cathedral located on Byrsa Hill in Carthage, Tunis Governorate, Tunisia. It was constructed in the late 19th century during the French protectorate.
The building is notable for its prominent position overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and for being part of the Carthage historic ensemble visited together with Roman and Punic remains. The exterior and hilltop setting are the main draw; the site is frequently photographed for its views over the sea and adjacent archaeological park.
The cathedral was built under French colonial administration in the late 1800s and named for Louis IX of France. After Tunisian independence the church was secularized and repurposed for cultural uses.
The cathedral stands on Byrsa Hill within the modern suburb of Carthage, overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and adjacent to the archaeological park and national museum; it lies within the greater Tunis metropolitan area.
- Proximity to Carthage ruins: Sits on Byrsa Hill immediately beside the Carthage archaeological site and the Carthage National Museum, making it easy to visit both the ruins and the former cathedral in one trip.
- Current use: After Tunisian independence the building was secularized and has been used for cultural events and exhibitions since the 1960s.
