Saint Isaac’s Cathedral on Saint Isaac’s Square features a massive gilded dome and a colonnade walkway. Visitors tour ornate interiors, mosaics and the elevated gallery for wide views of St. Petersburg.
Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is a large 19th-century cathedral in central St. Petersburg, designed and built by the architect Auguste de Montferrand between 1818 and 1858. It is noted for its massive gilded dome and grand classical exterior.
The richly decorated interior features high columns, extensive frescoes and ornamental stonework including malachite and lapis accents used in altarpieces and furnishings. A public colonnade around the dome provides an observation platform with panoramic views across the city.
Originally the city’s principal cathedral, the building was converted into a museum during the Soviet era and remains both a museum and a place where religious services are occasionally held. Conservation and display work preserve its 19th-century decoration and structural features.
The cathedral is located near the Neva River in central St. Petersburg, within walking distance of other major landmarks such as the Admiralty and Palace Square.
