How to Get to Safranbolu
Safranbolu is best reached by road via Karabük, which is the nearest rail and bus hub. Regional airports (Kastamonu, Zonguldak) provide access but often require a road transfer to Safranbolu.
Kastamonu Airport (KFS): One of the nearer regional airports to Safranbolu; from Kastamonu you can reach Safranbolu by shuttle or taxi-travel time is roughly 1.5-2 hours by road depending on connections and vehicle, and prices vary by carrier.
Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport (ONQ): Another regional airport used by visitors to the Black Sea region. From Çaycuma expect a drive of around 1.5-2.5 hours to Safranbolu by car or shuttle; public transfer options are limited and often require a bus or taxi leg.
Train: The nearest major rail hub is Karabük (Karabük Tren Garı), about 10-15 km from Safranbolu. Karabük is served by TCDD regional and intercity trains; from Karabük you can take a short local minibus (dolmuş) or taxi to Safranbolu (≈20-30 minutes).
Bus: Intercity buses run to Karabük and nearby cities; from Karabük and other regional bus stations frequent minibuses/dolmuş connect to Safranbolu. Bus travel is the most common public-transport route for visitors arriving from other Turkish cities.
How to Get Around Safranbolu #
Safranbolu’s old town is best seen on foot - narrow streets and historic wooden houses make the district pedestrian-friendly and not car-friendly. The town is compact, and walking is the simplest way to explore the UNESCO area. For travel to/from the town, buses and minibuses connect Safranbolu with Karabük and regional cities; taxis are available for short trips. Driving in the old quarter is restricted in places, so plan to park outside and walk in.
