The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is an extensive archaeological and religious complex in north-central Sri Lanka that served as a major ancient capital. The site preserves large stupas, monastic complexes and the sacred fig tree revered by Buddhists.
Anuradhapura developed as a political and religious centre from antiquity and served as a capital for many centuries under successive Sinhalese dynasties; its monuments reflect long-term royal patronage and Buddhist devotional activity. Much of the standing fabric today is the result of ancient construction, later modifications and modern conservation.
The ruins lie in Sri Lanka’s north-central plains within an extensive archaeological reserve that is surrounded by agricultural landscapes and smaller towns serving as visitor gateways.
