Sable Island is a narrow sandbar island in the North Atlantic off Nova Scotia, Canada, about 42 kilometres long and up to 1.5 kilometres wide. It is noted for its remote location, shifting dunes, and well‑known population of feral horses.

The island offers a landscape of low sandy dunes, beach, and grasslands with visible remains of numerous historic shipwrecks scattered along the shoreline. Wildlife viewing and photography are primary draws, particularly to observe the horses and seabirds; there are no developed visitor facilities on the island.

European mariners knew Sable Island from at least the 16th century and it has a long history of shipwrecks and lifesaving efforts. The island was designated Sable Island National Park Reserve in 2013 and has hosted scientific research and seasonal Parks Canada staff.

Sable Island sits in the Atlantic roughly 300 kilometres southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is exposed to open ocean conditions year round. The island is remote, with landings restricted and weather frequently changing.

  • Wild horses: Home to a population of feral horses that fluctuates seasonally and is a major reason for visits, along with unique dune ecology and shipwreck remains.
  • Protection and access: Designated a National Park Reserve in 2013 and managed by Parks Canada, with access controlled and visitor numbers limited.
  • Access and facilities: Most visits arrive by chartered small aircraft or organized boat trips; there are no permanent services for tourists on the island.
