Sabil-kuttab of Umar Bey
Monument Historic sabil-kuttab featuring traditional Islamic architecture
Tucked into Cairo’s old quarter, the Sabil‑kuttab of Umar Bey is a public fountain with a Qur’anic school above; walkers and architecture enthusiasts stop for ornate stone details and nearby historic streets.
Sabil-kuttab of Umar Bey is an Ottoman-period sabil-kuttab located in Cairo’s historic al-Gamaleya district, representative of the charitable architecture that provided water and basic religious education in the 18th-19th centuries.
The compact building features a ground-floor sabil niche and a small upper-room kuttab, with exterior decorative work that commonly includes carved stone and inscription panels. The monument’s scale is modest and it reads as part of the street frontage rather than a large standalone building. Local masonry and wooden latticework are typical elements.
Founded as a waqf by a private patron, it performed social and religious functions for its neighbourhood and like many similar structures has been treated in conservation projects to preserve its fabric.
It stands within the medieval core of Cairo close to al-Muizz Street and the Khan al-Khalili market area.
- Dual function: Two-level configuration pairs a street sabil and an upper kuttab used for Qur'anic instruction.
- Viewing: Best appreciated from the pavement where carved details, marble panels and inscriptions are visible; interiors may be closed to the public.
